Van Dyke Brown

"General Finishes products were used to paint, glaze and stain this piece. Milk paint in Basil, glazed with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects and finished with Exterior 450 Water Based Flat to allow you to use it inside or outside under a covered area."
"Well we took an ugly yellow table and turned it around as a new LIFE! Stripped down and finished in GF Antique White with beautiful Van Dyke Brown glazing in the details! Top has been stripped of that disgusting veneer and found a spectacular wood base that we finished for the most amazing blend of wood tones! Hand applied General Finishes Arm-R-Seal in satin. I love this piece. It’s versatile in style and detailed enough to look custom!" - Restoration Reserve
"At long last this pine beauty is complete! A full restoration was performed on this rustic chest and new life it has been given! This piece belonged to my clients Grandmother, likely dating back to the 1800’s with it’s hand cut dovetail joints. It has certainly stood the test of time having been moved numerous times, but nonetheless was in need of some TLC. My client asked for it to be lightened up and made functional and that is just what I did! I started by sanding back the existing...

This antique vanity is such a cool piece. It’s true when they say they just don’t make furniture like they used to, and this is the perfect example. Painted in Antique White by...
"What an incredible transformation this table has had! The paint job was pretty tired when my client found it and was in desperate need of a makeover. I stripped the old paint so we could start fresh. There was a ton of wear/water damage on the bottom which was made of an MDF substrate. We added a wooden bottom and I used an epoxy wood filler to fill the gap between the table and the new bottom, sanded and shaped it to the original and now it looks like it has always been that way. And it’s...
"Stunning, vintage trunk. Handmade. I kept all the original charm intact. The bronze iron latch, hinges and gorgeous feet. I also left all the little “beauty marks” it has acquired over the years. Painted Basil, dry brushed with Antique White & glazed with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects all by General Finishes! I also added that front wood embellishment, dry brushed, glazed and lightly distressed." - Ollie Rose Market
"Gorgeous 9 drawer dresser that exudes elegance. General Finishes Persian Blue Milk Paint with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects is the perfect color choice for this beauty!"

I just love what some good old fashioned elbow grease, some restoration and replacement, and an amazing neutral paint color can do for a tired, old piece! The previous orangey-black finish was quite ugly (scroll to see the before picture) and totally camouflaged the true beauty of this vintage 4 drawer chest! I just love how it transformed from tired, dark and meh…to romantic, sophisticated and beautiful!!

Like many pieces before her, this one had some issues and those...

"Coastal Vibes. General Finishes Persian Blue Milk Paint W/ Van Dyke Glaze brought this dresser back to life!" - Gracefully Modern

Have you ever tried painting fabric? The process is very different than painting furniture but I'm so pleased with the results!

When I found this $20 chair at the Habitat for Humanity Restore I walked past, admiring it, multiple times and even sitting down to test it out before I decided I couldn't leave without it.

Products used:
Fabric - General Finishes Lamp Black milk paint (mixed with water & fabric softener to achieve a cake batter consistency)

" I used General Finishes Millstone Milk Paint with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects and Burnished Pearl Effects accents." - Ivory & Oak
"I transformed this boring orange pine coffee table into a farmhouse dream using products I’d never used before. Don’t be scared to try new things! I knew I wanted a sort of barnwood farmhouse look to this table. I sanded the ugly orange pine to bare wood and applied Amy Howard At Home Better with Age which reacts to the tannins and oils in the wood and ages it. It’s a crap shoot what you’ll get and the pine turned a slight grayish color on the grain. Next I added General Finishes Van Dyke...

"I just fell in love with this cabinet as a soon as I saw it. It’s a petite charmer perfect as a nightstand or in an entryway. Perhaps in a bath for added storage and organizing? Painted in a mix of General Finishes Persian Blue and Westminster Green and then aged with Van Dyke Glaze. Do not be afraid to mix your own colors my friends! If you’re hesitant, trying mixing just drops of colors on a scrap piece of wood or paper before you mix up a larger quantity." - Gravity Hill Home

"This vintage Stanley 6 foot coffee table and end table set were completely made over from top to bottom. I stripped the old finish off of the tops and stained with Minwax Rustic Mahogany gel stain. Gel stain is a great alternative to my normal oil based stain when trying to match three table tops that want to stain completely different colors. It’s thicker and can be manipulated to get a closer match. The bases were painted in a custom mix of General Finishes Antique White with a tiny amount...

"I couldn’t be more pleased with how this project turned out! I have always loved the antique card catalogs but they are crazy hard to find and sooo expensive so I made a new version! It took several hours to turn a this once boring dresser into a faux antique catalogue I painted it in a new General Finishes color called Reverent Gray then aged it to perfection with my chippy paint technique and added Van dyke glaze with a super smooth layer of matte top coat for extra protection!"
"General Finishes custom mixed Seagull Gray, Empire Gray coated with Winter White Glaze. Accents & details in Alabaster with Van Dyke Glaze."
"Here she is, my friends! Completely made over from top to bottom, this gorgeous family heirloom is a hand carved Schlingmann Wertmobel cabinet that belonged to my clients parents in Germany. Even after making the trip from Germany to the U.S., this beauty was in near perfect condition and honestly, I was a tad bit intimidated to put paint on her flawless goodness. But wow! The makeover made each carving, each curve, each detail even more stunning and truly stand out.   My client chose a...
"These nightstands actually came from a vintage kneehole style desk! My friend Greg of The Furniture Fix split the desk apart and installed a reclaimed oak top on each side.   They were refinished using Brushable White Enamel tinted to Antique White by General Finishes. To age them a bit, I applied Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects. The reclaimed oak tops are stained in Antique Walnut and sealed with High Performance Satin."    Check out GF's full video library for product overview and how...

"This cabinet is a beast! I love these old pieces! It was a handmade family heirloom that we sanded down to raw wood and applied General Finishes White Gel Stain. We then sanded it back giving it a nice worn beachy look and highlighted the grooves with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects. We also added feet making this cabinet more then 9’ tall! It turned out beautiful! The picture doesn’t do it justice!!"

I didn’t want to distract from all the beautiful curves on this console table so I kept the paint simple and bright. The bottom was painted with General Finishes Brushable White Enamel while the top was first painted in Empire Gray, followed by a white wash and finished with a dry brushing of Van Dyke Brown Glaze. New black hardware and floral lined drawers complete this New Years revival."

"When a great customer loves a piece but needs a different color, you repaint. I did cringe a little because she loves red and I don’t but I have to say it came out amazing. Stepping out of my comfort zone sure did pay off. General Finishes in Holiday Red with Van Dyke Brown Glaze."

Driftwood Milk paint glazed with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects

This piece has been painted in General Finishes linen and then glazed in their van dyke brown glaze. The top has been planked, stained, and sealed to protect. There is one drawer which slides well, and one shelf for additional storage. A hole has been precut out of the backing for wiring. This is a super cute, solid piece that would work great for your TV.

I loved the lines of this petite china cabinet but almost didn’t buy it. It was missing a glass panel and shelves and had a couple other things wrong with it. But my friend made me a good deal and challenged me to “make something cool”. Never one to shy away from a challenge, I loaded it in my car. It lingered in my studio for a long time before I knew what to do with it. Taking my cue from the architecture of the piece I decided an Indian inlay look was the way to go. Playing off the...

No question this is a beautiful buffet.  With great carvings and detail work.  And it has it's flaws; although quite minor and cosmetic.

I really wanted to embrace the British Colonial era, and I knew I wanted to focus more on the finish of the body, rather than the center image transfer.

I think, on this piece, the image transfer is secondary.  And because of that, I choose to mute the image.

My aim when working on a piece of furniture is never to make it look '...

The bones of this kitchen are amazing, we just needed to add paint and glaze to make it brighter, and custom to the clients decor. The outer cabinets had Antique white and Van Dyke Brown glaze and the hutch and island had several layers of glaze. And when I say layers, it was 7 and that doesn’t include priming and sealing. Yikes, we sure did need an arm massage at the end of this one!

"Check out this beautiful farmhouse style dresser we refinished for a customer!!!! We painted this in General Finishes Linen Milk Paint with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects and sealed in satin top coat then we painted the top in Dark Chocolate Milk Paint and sealed with semi-gloss top coat!!!!" - NB.Restorations

"This turned into quite the project! Our client took all of these pieces off of an old wardrobe and had them painted to be used as wall art and an artificial fireplace! What a great idea. They turned out absolutely gorgeous! These were done with a mix of Limestone, Seagull Gray, and Antique White Milk Paints by General Finishes, and glazed in Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects, Slate Gray, and Patina Green." - Painted Paradise, by Duke Interiors and Restoration

"She’s finished and she’s beautiful! Done in General Finishes Linen Milk paint and Van Dyke Brown glaze. All the old veneer was removed and top and legs stained in Nutmeg Gel Stain. Picked up these sweet new flower pulls to give it a whole new look. It will grace the center of a room to show off all of its unique beauty!!" - Kimberly Designed

I was drawn to this dresser because of the combination of drawers and doors. It was covered in layers of sloppily applied paint and I originally just planned to refresh the paint. However, as I was prepping and lightly sanding, I noticed these vertical lines on the drawer fronts coming through the paint. After sanding the drawers more heavily, the wood panels were revealed and my vision began to take shape. I started with a couple of fresh coats of Persian Blue Milk paint. I followed that...

How could you cover up that beautiful wood grain?  Their were some pieces of trim that were missing from the doors.  So, after careful reconstruction the doors and frame received two coats of General Finishes Milk Paint in Driftwood followed by Van Dyke Brown Glaze and High Performance Top Coat in Satin.  The wood grain drawer fronts and top surface were sanded down and stained with General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain followed by GF Arm-R- Seal.
