I loved the lines of this petite china cabinet but almost didn’t buy it. It was missing a glass panel and shelves and had a couple other things wrong with it. But my friend made me a good deal and challenged me to “make something cool”. Never one to shy away from a challenge, I loaded it in my car. It lingered in my studio for a long time before I knew what to do with it. Taking my cue from the architecture of the piece I decided an Indian inlay look was the way to go. Playing off the original beautiful blue on the inside, I chose General Finishes Milk Paint in Coastal Blue over a custom mix using GF Persian Blue and Coastal Blue. I then stenciled the entire piece using the Indian Inlay stencil set from Cutting Edge Stencils and Pearl Plaster from Artisan Enhancements. After some light distressing, I further enhanced the iridescent quality of the Pearl Plaster with colored glazes and aged it a tiny bit with GF Van Dyke Brown Glaze. I then sealed it all up with GF High Performance Top Coat in Satin. I built new wood shelves and color matched them to the original blue on the inside using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Inside the bottom of the cabinet was painted in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Primer Red which perfectly matched the awesome red and gold paper I found at The Paper Source which lines the drawers. New hardware from Hobby Lobby perfectly completes the Global Chic look.
