"Carrara Marble" Countertop with GF Milk Paint

About This Post

Complete kitchen cabinet and countertop transformation by Boutique Unique!   The cabinets were painted in General Finishes Driftwood Gray and the countertops were given the looks of Carrara marble using General Finishes paints and pearl effects!!   Boutique Unique says, "To achieve this marble look we practiced and practiced and watched several tutorials in addition to attending some faux finish training. Here's what we did: first we sanded the existing countertops to get some microscopic abrasions for adhesion. Then we cleaned thoroughly with 50/50 denatured alcohol and water. We then primed with Zinsser BIN primer. Next step was painting the entire surface with General Finishes Snow While Milk Paint. Then comes the veining. Look at marble and see how the veining runs naturally. We took GF Driftwood Milk Paint and used Snow White and Lamp Black to lighten and darken until we had three distinct shades of gray. We then used a torn piece of cardboard to apply the veins. This is done in small sections. We then misted the wet "veins" generously with water and used a hair dryer on cool setting to blow the veins in one direction and spread them. After all veining was done we heavily watered down the GF Snow White Milk Paint until opaque and painted over the entire surface three times to achieve that deep veining look. Next, we mixed GF Champagne Pearl Effects and High Performance Topcoat in gloss for a sparkly shine. We applied this mixture with quality foam brushes. The next coat was just GF High Performance Topcoat in gloss. Our experience with painting countertops with GF products is that they hold up extremely well under normal use once they have a good two week cure time."   Boutique Unique is a General Finishes retailer.
