Gel Stain

Gel Stain from General Finishes is home of the popular Java Gel Stain featured across the nation's social media for upcycling furniture and cabinets. Gel wood stains are heavy-bodied and do not penetrate as deeply into the wood as liquid oil-based wipe-on stains do, providing the deepest, richest colors of any oil-based stain available.

"These little oak dressers are one of my favorites to renew! The body was painted in General Finishes Lamp Black while the top and drawers were stained in a custom blend of Antique Walnut and Java Gel Stains, the two pair perfectly together! New modern farmhouse iron hardware and ticking stripe drawer liners complete this transformation and have given this beauty a second life!"

"Beautiful solid wood buffet freshly painted in General Finishes Queenstown Gray and the the top was sanded down and freshly stained in GF’s Antique Walnut Gel Stain the bottom three drawers were also sanded and stained Antique Walnut. Stained areas were poly coated and the rest was dark waxed for protection."

"This one needed some love so we gave it a really good sanding and cleaning. The outside was primed and painted in The Chippy Barn Magnolia paint and sealed. The drawers were stained in General Finishes Antique Walnut and Java Gel Stains and also sealed. I even sealed the insides of the drawers with Wise Owl Paint furniture salve!!"
"I love a good before and after, don’t you?! My client’s brother made this for her back when he was in high school and she’s kept it all these years. Isn’t that the sweetest?! It’s gotten a darker and richer stain along with new glass pulls. This was a 70/30 mix of General Finishes Antique Walnut & Black Gel Stain. Finished off with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal in Satin."
Bombay Lift-Top Table finished in General Finishes Ash Gray Gel Stain

"This little parlor table was found at least two years ago. It was in horrible condition finish wise and had a bum leg from numerous bad repairs. But I had to have it because I could see so much potential. Once I started working on it, I learned it had been refinished at least once before and the veneer on the top was paper thin. What does that mean? That meant I had to be extra extra careful when I sanded so I didn’t go through the veneer and ruin the chances of staining the beautiful top....

"I started working on this buffet over 2 years ago. I had planned to strip the entire piece and refinish, but after stripping it 3 times, sanding, and stripping again some of the stubborn finish still would not come off the sides and front of the frame. So I had to paint those areas in this burnt orange color to match my living room rug. Buffet stained in General Finishes Nutmeg Gel Stain, sealed with Arm-R-Seal in gloss. Painted in a mix of General Finishes Persimmon and Lamp Black Milk Paint...
When I found this desk, I knew it had so much potential even though it had seen way better days. I was looking at it through a painters eyes knowing how fun those details would be. But the original finish was peeling in places and worn completely off in others and I knew it was going to be a big job to prep and get it ready to paint. So it went into my trailer where I store my ‘I’ll get to it someday’ unfinished furniture. When my client came to pick up a couple of pieces he had purchased that...

"A simple wood dresser underneath layers of latex paint, and some other kind of original stain. I could see it’s potential from the moment I saw it. I peeled off as much of the latex as I could and sanded the rest (including the original stain). The grain that came out just made my heart so excited. I used General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain for the drawers and sealed with the Gel Topcoat. The frame was chalk painted using Annie Sloan’s Paris Grey. Even though I filled the holes before...

"There is so much to love about an antique empire chest of drawers – proud stance, curvy scrollwork, and graduated drawers are signature characteristics of the coveted 1800s American style. Our newest charm, Suzannah bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary design, delivering excellent craftsmanship and a new two-toned look to her new home.   The vision was clear, but it took some time and care to get her to this reveal. After good cleaning and prep sanding, I chose General...
"I’m very excited to share this chest I restored for my friend. I did some research on it, and it was made in 1933 by the Rockford Cedar Furniture company, and has been in my friend’s family for generations. She remembers playing on it as a child. It had all the scratches and wear to show for it! I was thrilled to be able to restore it to its former glory, and update it with accents of black to fit in with modern decor. The top was finished with General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain;...
"Beautiful in black, this mid century dresser has gold accents side strips complementing the gorgeous General Finishes Lamp Black Milk painted frame and Nutmeg Gel stained drawers."

"This antique parlor table was saved from the garbage and given to me. ❤️ As I thought about what color to paint the base, I started sanding as part of the prep before painting. As I worked, I realized the table was perfect the way it was, partially sanded and sealed, kept a little antique rustic, while the top and sides were completely sanded and refinished in General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain."

"Made with maple, ash, and white oak hardwood, this solid dresser/changing table will last through the years as the child grows up. Since it was made with real wood, the color can be changed to stay relevant with the times.   One big benefit of a custom piece of furniture is that it can be designed with dimensions to fit a particular space. This dresser was constructed a little taller than a normal three drawer dresser to make diaper changing a little easier for the parents, who both...

"Curved drawers on this Bassett mid century dresser needed something special and unique. General Finishes White Gel Stain gave them a modern whitewash look. Surrounded by an Alabaster Milk painted frame, accented with gold handles and feet creates a simply elegant design."

"This piece was made between 1871 and 1900 because of the beautiful Knapp Joints on the drawers (those cute little scalloped joints in the second pic.) Knapp joints were only used for this short period of time in history. So that would make it between 120-149 years old! How cool is that?!   It is made from all solid Walnut with the exception of the burl veneer on the drawers and door front. I just couldn’t paint this beauty! It was missing it’s top so I made a new wood plank top painted...
"Wow! What a difference! This was my client’s vision and it turned out amazing! General Finishes Lamp Black Milk Paint and Antique Walnut Gel Stain brought this mid century dresser back to a new beautiful. Those solid brass knobs are stunners."
"Refinished walnut nightstand This piece is in beautiful vintage condition. It was sanded down and stained in Nutmeg by General Finishes. The piece was sealed for lasting protection."
"I was trying to achieve the “Restoration Hardware” look. What do you think? This coffee table was sanded back to almost bare and then I applied General Finishes Gel Stain in Ash Gray. My first time using that color but will not be my last!" -

I am drooling over these colors on this desk! Painted in Dixie BellAntebellum Blue, with light distressing. Top was stained in the beautiful Ash Gray gel stain from General Finishes

"Lane cedar chests are my most favorite pieces to revive! The second I saw this chest for sale I knew I was going to remove the bottom and add tapered wood legs and I couldn’t be happier with how it updated the look. I used a combination of General Finishes Antique Walnut Gel Stain and Lamp Black Milk Paint. It seemed a little boring to me so I decided to add some fun stripes. The original hardware and lock were painted gold to complete this transformation!"

White Gel Stain Table Top

"I think this one goes down in the books for epic before/after. I ended up popping off the drawer fronts and was left with THE most fabulous old wood. I bought site unseen and almost dragged it to the curb when I brought it home :/ GF Gel Stain rub down :) ✔ THAT off the list!"  This look was achieved with General Finishes Candlelite and Java Gel Stains and Pitch Black Glaze Effects to give a deeper black tone to top and sides.

I also used General Finishes gel stain in Ash Gray for the top. I love love love this gray stain! Every other gray stain I’ve tried has gone on blue. This one actually went on a warm gray and neutralized the red orange mahogany. I will definitely be looking for more pieces to use this stain.

"Very unique, solid and well built Kroehler mid century dresser or buffet. One of a kind wood petal accents surrounding brass knobs are unusual and so cool! Solid brass swing handles are the bling on General Finishes Lamp Black Milk Paint top drawers, as well as the frame, with Java Gel stained bottom drawers."   See all General Finishes colors here: https://generalfinishes.com/all-colors

This beautiful mid century modern dresser was manufactured by West Michigan Furniture Co. right here in Holland! I found this in the attic of a home that was being torn down, I am so glad I was able to rescue it.

The top and drawer fronts were stained in General Finishs Antique walnut gel stain and the remainder of the body painted in lamp black, one of my favorite colors combinations. New more current hardware was added to complete this transformation.

"Did something a little different because variety is the spice of life, right?! Loving how this super sleek and moody piece turned out! The contrast of the petite knobs that coordinate with the (practically indestructible) Formica top are simple yet oh so elegant. Color~ General Finishes Gel Stain in Black and sealed with 2 coats of Arm-R-Seal Gloss for clarity and a final coat of Satin for a beautiful subtle glow✨"
"This sweet Antique Half Moon Table is ready to go back home! This antique table holds a special place in my client's heart as it belonged to her mother. She wasn’t looking to change it but definitely wanted to bring it back to life. We completely refinished it with General Finishes Antique Walnut and a custom tinted High Performance Satin finish. A perfect match to the original look!"
"Look at that wood grain! I know that stripping and sanding a piece does take that extra time, but I absolutely love a stained top. This is General Finishes Java Gel Stain, my go to stain. This is one coat, I might add another coat, but I know once I put the satin topcoat on then it will get richer."

"Custom Ash table top with General Finishes Ash Gray Gel Stain and custom bench to fit in the corner. The clients had a great vision... table and banquette were custom built just for them and that space."

"This was one of those pieces that I knew immediately could not be made better with paint. It was a light stain. It was, up close, pretty beat up. But it had fantastic bones and details! Stripped, sanded, filled and stained in General Finishes Antique Walnut (Gel Stain). It’s a long exhausting process! But worth it in the end♥️"

Absolutely stunning desk by ReFind Design by Coco Clare!   "We refinished this Vintage French Provincial Desk in General Finishes Nutmeg with a hand rubbed finish."

"This beautiful antique dresser was passed down to my client from her grandmother. Over the decades it had been painted several times and landed on a 70’s avocado green. Their dream was to have this special piece restored and hopefully showcase the beautiful wood hiding underneath the many layers of paint. First we completely stripped the piece to bare wood then stained it with General Finishes Nutmeg (Gel Stain). Finally we finished it with a rich, hand rubbed oil based satin finish. Check...
