Gel Stain

Gel Stain from General Finishes is home of the popular Java Gel Stain featured across the nation's social media for upcycling furniture and cabinets. Gel wood stains are heavy-bodied and do not penetrate as deeply into the wood as liquid oil-based wipe-on stains do, providing the deepest, richest colors of any oil-based stain available.

"I was able to snag part of an old bar from a historic tavern in our town that was relocating. This piece was old, dirty, and layered with gunk when I brought it home. We cleaned it up and prepped it and I went to work restoring the wood.

We used several layering techniques with different stains and added 4" metal wheels and a custom built chevron planked top for an overall industrial look. This piece came out gorgeous!" - Rebecca

Lovely GF Nutmeg Gel Stained dresser.   "Ever wonder "How does it work?" This piece is the perfect example... Mari got in touch with me and told me what she was looking for, the dimension range and her maximum budget for the piece. I found it and with her approval purchased and stored it until I was ready to work on it. She then came in to the shop to go over color sample and ideas... eventually saying "do whatever you think is best" (which is my favorite thing to hear by the way) I want...

"This beautiful antique dresser is now available! It is a 100 year-old dresser restored and refinished with General Finishes Milk Paint in Linen and Brown Mahogany Gel Stain." - Rancho La Flor

This is the first time I tried GF gel stain in black. It's a super dark and rich color. I applied it in broad thick strokes using a paper towel. I used a loose gestural motion in the application. The end result is a subtle yet dramatic texture on the surface of this art deco dresser. The drawer fronts were sanded to the raw veneer and sealed with GF High Performance Topcoat in satin.

"In the end we will all become stories...

Missing drawers, layers of filth, a rotting leather top, and a rusty, pieced together sheet metal back were no match for me!

The leather was taken off.  Rusty back peeled away.  Empty shelves sawed out.  Hardware removed.  Thoroughly cleaned. Body completely sanded.  Drawers lightly sanded to preserve some patina.

The desk is made by Drexel and designed by John Van Koert- a furniture designer who was very influential in bringing Danish design to America in the 1960's. "This gorgeous antique Tiger Oak chest with amazing beveled mirror. I couldnt cover up all her amazing wood grain, it made her who she is. So I stained her down and restained her. "I stripped all the material off the sides down to the frame, sanded the feet, and added the new siding... I did the best I could with the alignment and then filled in any gaps with a stainable wood filler, which worked great! I stained everything (feet and sides) in General Finishes’ Java Gel Stain (because I’m obsessed with the stuff) and finished with a couple coats of a Minwax Polyurethane. This chest is heavy-duty now!" - Restored Living

"Finished for a client. Boy were these chairs a hot mess, had to be former bar/restaurant chairs. They have been used and abused, covered in greasy, grimy nicotine gunk. I ended up having to strip and sand them back to bare wood- not the initial plan, but sometimes the furniture itself throws in its own curve balls into your project. They were then stained with General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel Stain. After staining and sealing, two of the chairs were painted in a custom creamy blend. The...

"Loving this new Industrial Table & bench! Custom stools can be added (or another bench)! Need a different size? We customize! This table was stained using General Finishes Candlelite Gel Stain, with Java Gel Stain rubbed in, sealed with High Performance Flat Topcoat. We find that Gel Stains are really effective in working color into soft woods like Fir. Letting one color dry, then using a rag to work in a darker color on top helps create this look, which is a total "wow." " - Lush•Paint...
"This light maple desk is boring no more! The top was sanded down to bare wood, exposing beautiful birds eye maple. "I decided to sand down my kitchen table and restain it with General Finishes Gel Stain in Antique Walnut, the same can I used on my fiberglass front door posted a few weeks ago...then 4 coats of their Enduro topcoat. The sanding took the most time but still only a half hour...I worked on it off and on throughout the day for a total of maybe an hour. It was done by the time the kids got off the bus and we still ate dinner on it. I wish I had a pic before sanding but I just jumped in and...

Melinda of Crimson + Oak Designs submitted this dashing desk to the Cinderella Story category of the 2016 GF Design Challenge Contest.

"A true trash to treasure - this vintage desk was rescued from the curb after it had been sitting in the rain!

The finish was chipping, cracking and peeling. The wood on the feet was soft and spongy. It took several days of stripping off old finish and then drying with a heater to get it back to a point where I could even apply the gel stain...

Check out this awesome repurposing! Stephanie of Rehab to Fab found a unique way to save an obliterated chair and submitted this to the Cinderella Story of the 2016 GF Design Challenge Contest.

"Love your stains. Recently did a dresser in an Annie Sloan mix but the top is the show stopper. I created a faux burl effect with a couple of your stains. It worked out fabulously. I used the water-based Orange Dye Stain first, then proceeded to use Candlelite and Java Gel Stains to aid in the burl effect!" - Tammy Sue of The Uppity

To achieve the teal-blue that has been created for the base, GF would recommend mixing Coastal Blue and Patina Green Milk Paint.

"This dresser had a damaged top drawer..no problem...just turn it into a shelf! The body is painted with Brick Red Milk Paint and topped with Van Dyke Brown Glaze Effects. The drawers were sanded and stained with Java Gel. Thanks to General Finishes products, you would never know this was once a plain blond dresser!" - Seasoned Style

Kirsten McKee of That Flippin Furniture Girl restyled this dresser with a sharp, custom color!

"The stain is a custom blend of Antique Walnut and Georgian Cherry Gel Stain - 5:1 ratio," Kirsten explains.
