Java Gel Bathroom Cabinets

About This Post

Painted orange builder grade oak bathroom cabinets with Java Gel thin layers with foam brush. Applied there coats of Java Gel followed by two coats of polyurethane. We did not use remove excess using rag method instead we used dry foam brush to smoothen the surface and spread any excess. As we applied very thin layer, we did not leave much excess gel stain on the surface to smoothen. It really takes 3 coats to have solid finish. The cabinets looked ugly after first and second coat - highly recommend to have patience and wait till you apply third coat. Results are amazing. We used hard wood brand satin polyurethane which is glossy enough for cabinets. We bought the Gel Stain from JC Licht near our place.

Frame painting goes much faster where cabinets take some time due to grooves / trim around. We waited 24 hours before coats. It took us two weeks to finish the project given it took six days to paint doors (3 coats in the front and 3 in the back). We waited over 24 hours before putting top coat - we would have waited longer if third coat was heavy.

It is very nice product but frustrating in the begining. Once we got used to its thickness, we had fun. Planning to use antigue walnut to paint kitchen cabinets.
