Finishing over waterbased poly

About This Post

I have a bit of a predicament.  Sixteen years ago, I constructed my kitchen cabinets out of maple and put a clear finish on them.  Over the years, the maple has yellowed to the point that my wife wants me to do something about it.  I really do not want to paint them, I would like to put a colored finish on them that would still show the wood.  I tried a product from minwax called polyshades, but it did not adhere to the onderlying finish.  Is there any way or any product that will accomplish this, or am I destined to paint them? Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
